What Are ESD Testers?
ESD testers are instruments or monitoring devices selected according to the control function being evaluated. A personnel-grounding test, a work-surface resistance measurement, a continuous-monitor indication, and an ionizer performance evaluation answer different questions and may use different methods, fixtures, test conditions, result bases, records, and corrective actions. 1
The useful starting point is therefore the installed control item and the written program requirement—not the assumption that one tester or one result applies to every ESD-control task. Grounding Tests and ESD Control Verification provides the guide-level verification context.
Documented Application Contexts
| Control situation | Category role | Engineering question |
|---|---|---|
| Personnel entering or working in an EPA | Confirm a defined personnel-grounding arrangement before or during work. | What configuration is being evaluated: wrist strap, footwear/flooring, garment system, or a specified combination? |
| ESD workstation operation | Evaluate the status of a work surface, grounding path, wrist strap system, or continuous-monitor circuit. | Does the instrument or monitor address the actual control path and program requirement? |
| Material or work-surface evaluation | Measure an electrical property of a material or installed surface using the applicable method. | What test method, electrodes, conditioning, location, and result basis are required? |
| Ionization verification | Evaluate ionizer offset voltage and discharge behavior in a defined arrangement. | Is an ionization performance instrument required rather than a personnel or workstation tester? |
Ionizer Balance, Decay Time and Performance Verification addresses the separate ionization scope. Grounding and Workstation Control Products provides the associated controls. Grounding and ESD Questions and Answers provides reader-facing program context.
Product Types
1. Test Function
| Product type | What it evaluates | Typical control context | Database fields to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrist-strap and footwear tester | A defined personnel-grounding loop or system configuration. | EPA entry, workstation use, periodic personnel checks. | Test item, test method, user interface, result indication, fixture / stand and record method. |
| Worksurface or material resistance instrument | Electrical property of a surface, material, mat, floor, packaging or related control item under a specified method. | Material qualification, installed-surface evaluation, troubleshooting or program verification. | Measurement function, method, electrode / fixture requirement, range, test voltage and record format. |
| Continuous workstation monitor | Ongoing status of one or more defined grounding or personnel-control paths. | Workstations where continuous indication is part of the control plan. | Monitored paths, wrist-strap configuration, worksurface monitoring, alarm / indication, output and installation interface. |
| Ionization performance instrument | Offset-voltage and discharge-time evaluation under a defined ionizer test arrangement. | Ionizer verification and troubleshooting. | Plate / monitor form, test configuration, range, timing behavior, source method and calibration information. |
2. Monitoring and Record Form
The product form may be a portable tester, a bench instrument, a fixed monitor, a multi-function assessment kit, or a software-connected record device. These are integration forms rather than a performance ranking. The relevant form is the one that supports the required test item, representative installation, and documentation path.
Product Comparison Criteria
Compare the documented product attributes below when reviewing category records. These fields support product-to-product comparison; they do not prescribe a complete static-control method or a step-by-step selection workflow. Use the related Technology & Applications and Product Guides pages for those separate questions.
| Decision dimension | Information to define or record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Control item | Person, wrist strap, footwear/flooring system, work surface, ground path, material, ionizer or another defined item. | Prevents a measurement category from being used outside its intended question. |
| Required method | Applicable procedure, test configuration, electrodes/fixture, conditioning, interval, result basis and record requirement. | The method gives a number or indication its meaning. |
| Installation and workflow | Portable point, fixed entry station, workbench monitor, production-line instrument or laboratory arrangement. | Determines access, repeatability, user interaction and data handling. |
| Result and response | Pass/fail indication, measured value, alarm, data output, record retention and corrective-action path. | A result must connect to a site-defined response, not end at the display. |
| Service and evidence | Calibration information, functional checks, current documentation and traceable record field. | Instrument condition and documentation affect confidence in a result. |
Technical Specifications
Fields not documented in the cited source are not inferred from another model, family, or manufacturer. They remain recorded as Not documented until an applicable official source is available.
| Field group | Technical information to compare | Meaning | Record boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Manufacturer, brand, model / series, tester type | Identifies the manufacturer documentation. | Retain official source URL; do not infer current availability. |
| Test function | Test item, test method, applicable configuration and target control path | Defines the question the instrument is intended to answer. | Method and acceptance basis remain program- and item-specific. |
| Measurement behavior | Range, resolution, accuracy, test voltage, timing, indication or alarm field | Describes documented instrument behavior. | Record exact values only from the official source and its conditions. |
| Integration | Portable/fixed form, stand/footplate, monitor interface, output, power and data-record field | Describes installation and workflow. | Optional interfaces must be recorded as model-specific. |
| Evidence and service | Calibration information, functional-check field, certificate/service record and source URL | Connects an instrument record to evidence. | A calibration record does not certify an ESD program. |
