Static electricity is an imbalance of electrical charge within or on the surface of a material. The related term electrostatic charge means charge at rest. When that imbalance creates an electric field, it can influence nearby objects; when charge transfers rapidly between objects at different electrical potentials, the event is called electrostatic discharge (ESD). The EOS/ESD Association’s introductory guidance makes this distinction explicit.
In industrial work, static electricity is therefore not a separate kind of “factory electricity.” It is a condition that can arise during ordinary material handling, movement and transfer. Whether it becomes consequential depends on the materials, process conditions, charge path and the task being performed.
How static charge forms
The most common mechanism is contact-and-separation charging. When materials touch and separate, electrons can transfer between their surfaces. This is commonly called triboelectric charging. It can occur with similar or different materials, although the result depends on the materials and the circumstances of contact and separation. Industrial processes contain many opportunities for contact, separation, flow and motion. A moving web can pass over rollers; parts can move through packaging or feeders; a powder can travel through a system; and liquids can be poured, pumped, filtered or moved through pipework. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety notes that charge can build during liquid transfer and that the amount developed depends in part on the material volume and how quickly it flows, is agitated or stirred. Charge, field and discharge are related but different

This distinction helps avoid a common simplification: a static problem is not defined only by a spark. Charge may contribute to attraction, repulsion, contamination or handling difficulty before a discharge is observed. Why static electricity matters in industrial processes
The operational effect of static electricity depends on the process. For example, charged surfaces can attract particles; lightweight materials can become difficult to separate or position; and ESD-sensitive items can be exposed to a rapid charge-transfer event. These are different process problems, so they should not be treated as one generic “static issue.”

In locations involving flammable liquids, vapours or dust, static electricity can be a safety issue rather than merely a production nuisance.
